Rainwater Harvesting
Efficient water use is becoming increasingly important to all Texans.  With growing populations and limited supplies of both ground water and surface water, we must all use this resource wisely.  Rainwater capture coupled with conservation and the use of native and water-wise landscape selections is an easy and practical way of accomplishing this goal.  Rainwater harvesting systems can be as simple as storebought rainbarrels under your downspouts.  Larger, more efficient, professionally-installed systems can store far more water and include such features as first-flush filters to allow the first flush of rainwater which contains the most contaminants to flow out separate from the rainwater you'll be saving.  These larger systems can hold the captured rainwater above the ground in reinforced plastic or galvanized metal tanks for re-use later.  Multiple tanks can be daisy-chained together for even more holding capacity.

Underground Rain Storage
The original settlers in Texas often stored rainwater in underground cisterns.  As cities grew, they drilled their own wells or dug their own lakes and municipal water supplies slowly took over as the major suppliers of water to Texans.  Now, Texans are taking a fresh look at rain harvesting and at the importance of available fresh water to the future of our state.

RainXChange
For situations where an above ground rain storage solution simply won't fit, you can store rainwater underground either in pre-made tanks or in a modular system such as the Rain XChange system that can be made to fit any shape or size you have available.  These systems can hold many tens of thousands of gallons of water underground and out of sight.  In fact, landscaping can be installed on top as soon as the containers are buried and no one will know how much fresh water you have at your disposal.  These systems can even be driven over and no one is the wiser.  Another advantage of the RainXChange system is that you can recirculate the stored rainwater through a pondless waterfall or other pondless water feature to keep it fresh and aerated while it's being stored.  Plus you get the advantage of a beautiful water feature to relax beside in addition to the water savings you'll be enjoyng from installing your own rainwater harvesting system and being part of the solution.  Another neat thing about the Rain XChange is that you can capture rainwater directly through a permeable patio installed on top of the reservoir.  This gives you additional capturing capacity beyond just what water flows from the roof.

This Rain XChange reservoir will hold 35,000 gallons of captured rainwater underground.
